Puerto Madryn is situated in the Province of Chubut, on the Golfo Nuevo’s western coast.

Due to Golfo Nuevo is practically surrounded by coastal formations, such as Península de Valdes, the city has a natural overcoat in front of the pounding of oceanic waters. This protection and the depth of the gulf provide the ideal conditions to lodge port installations destined for huge boats and also for smaller boats, because of  the low roughness of its waters.

The Golfo Nuevo’s shape is similar to an ellipse whose bigger diameter has 65 Kms. The entrance mouth is small and scarcely surpass 15 Kms. The borders of the gulf show stretches of escarpments and stretches of beaches. In all of them, the sea coast has a beach that falls in a soft downgrade to the interior, generally reaching 10 m of depth to a distance of 1000 m.

In the open sea (outside Golfo Nuevo) is extended the Argentinean Sea with its important ichthyic richness. This sea opens itself to the South Atlantic Ocean and communicate Puerto Madryn with all the shipping routes of the area.

The Almirante Storni pier is situated outside Golfo Nuevo’s coast.
The pier has a viaduct that is approximately 1.200 m. long.

4 kilometres to the south, in front of the downtown, is situated the tourist pier called: Comandante Luis Piedra Buena. This pier was inaugurated in October 2003 for cruiser industry.
