The Almirante Storni pier installations were, designed in its beginning, as a constituent part of the industrial complex ALUAR (Aluminio Argentino). In that context, the project included a mining pier for the reception of raw materials (mainly bauxite) and a pier for sending the end products all over the world.

This complex, later called Almirante Storni pier, was built in the early sixties, inside the industrial promotion regimen, which was established at the end of the 60’s.

In the 80’s, with the development of the fishing industry in Argentina, Puerto Madryn suffered its first important transformation. The fishing boats started to use the pier as an operational base. In that way, the port extended its attention to the factory boats and freezing boats.

The development of this new activity brought the installation of an industrial fishing park to the north of the port where the fishes are processed.

In the 90’s, the sanction of the law 24.093/92 permitted that the port could pass to its jurisdiction of the province of Chubut according to the Provincial Law Nº 3755 and its Regulated Decree Nº209/93, therefore the decisions and the management of the port’s operation began to depend mainly on the necessities of the Province and on the region which attends the port.

At present, the port administration is in the hands of “Administración Portuaria de Puerto Madryn” (APPM). It is a public entity, which doesn’t belong to the State, with juridical representation and full legal capacity.

In the last years have appeared new activities connected with the port. Therefore, the port installations were enlarged with the construction of a new pier for fishing boats, called Site Nº 5 and Site Nº 6, and also with the enlargement of the pier for general goods, known as Site Nº 3.

In addition to this enlargement, the pier had a bigger capacity of attention to the different fishing fleets which work in this area nowadays, particularly to the fresh fish fleets, freezing fleets and merchant fleets. Another objective was to increase the facilities for the exportation of goods which are produced locally, including the manufactured products of the fishing activity.
